Stelrad LST Radiators at Home at Castlestead View

Castlestead View is a new Extra-Care development recently opened in Oxenholme in Cumbria, just one and half miles from the Lake District National Park. It’s the latest of many care, nursing and independent living developments for older people across the country, to incorporate low surface temperature (LST) radiators from the Stelrad range to keep its residents warm and comfy in the colder months.

In all there are more than 450 Stelrad LST radiators of varying sizes in the one and two- bedroom apartments and the bungalows that form this cleverly designed development owned and managed by Housing 21. Housing 21 is a leading not-for-profit provider of Retirement Living and Extra Care properties for older people of modest means.

It operates in 240 local authority areas, managing around 20,000 Retirement and Extra Care Living properties and providing over 38,000 hours of social care each week.

The radiators were installed by sub-contractor Gastech (North Shields) working for main contractors Engie.

This development has been designed to provide fully accessible facilities for both residents and visitors, which include a café/bistro and hair salon for use by the community. There is also a residents’ lounge, an activity room, a buggy store, a guest suite and communal gardens for residents and their visitors to enjoy.

The development offers a range of ownership options from outright sale of the bungalows, shared ownership with purchasers owning a minimum of 25% of the properties, and rental with one and two-bedroom apartments available for social rent, where housing benefit is accepted. In total there are 146 properties within the new development.

Stelrad’s Specification Manager Lewis Aird says these developments are perfect for the UK’s best-selling low surface temperature radiator range: “We were delighted to be selected for this impressive development and to see our LST range providing safe to touch radiators throughout the development. These radiators come with a casing that never heats up beyond 43°C and the casing also covers all incoming and outgoing pipework making them 100% safe.”

Low surface temperature radiators have been part of the heating landscape for several years now, but modern versions offer a number of new benefits. LST radiators are key where there is a need for special heat emitters that are ideal for safety critical environments – especially those that need to meet NHS Guidance for ‘Safe Hot Water and surface temperature’ – in hospitals, care and nursing homes, doctors and dentist’s surgeries as well as sheltered housing, schools and nurseries. It’s a specification requirement of building designers and architects that the heat emitters in these buildings protect the young, the elderly and the vulnerable, who will live in or visit buildings such as these.

Bearing in mind where many LST radiators are installed, it’s vital that they are built to be robust and able to withstand and resist vandalism and day to day wear and tear, from being knocked into by trolleys and wheelchairs – especially in hospitals and nursing homes. With those manufactured by Stelrad, the casing is held by security fittings that are quick and easy to install. The security fittings have a unique seam fixing bracket system that prevents unauthorised access to the emitter accommodated inside. In addition, Stelrad LST radiators – for additional protection – have an additional long lasting, anti-bacterial paint coating, which provides an additional valuable benefit for the environments in which they are installed.

Stelrad’s Head of Marketing Chris Harvey says: “LST radiators offer a safe means of heating homes and buildings where young, old and vulnerable people who may be susceptible to burns from conventional radiators live and congregate. It’s a straightforward, ‘no brainer’ response to a lot of environments where safety is the key at the design stage.”
