FAQ

What size radiator for a bathroom?

Open Close

In order to choose the correct radiator in your bathroom, you need to consider the temperature you would like once installed. Bathrooms typically tend to be between 21 – 23°C (but you may prefer your room to be warmer or cooler).

First, measure the length, width and height in metres. If you do not have a square room, section the room into separate rectangles and measure each one separately.

Next, you must take into account heat loss, note down any windows or doors and whether they are single or double glazed. You are now ready to perform your BTU calculation, Stelrad have a basic and advanced heat loss programmes to help you do this.

A typical bathroom will require 1-2 radiators or towel rails, however for larger rooms you may require more. The amount of BTU’s required per radiator will depend on how many radiators are within the room – so divide the total BTU requirement by the number of radiators to calculate the average BTU’s required per radiator.

Can you put a normal radiator in a bathroom?

Open Close

Yes, although the warranty may be reduced as it’s classed as a high humidity area.

There are positives with each option, a horizontal steel panel radiator provides the heat for the room and heat towels, whilst a vertical heated towel rail will dry and warm the towels but frees up space in the bathroom.

There are radiator options available, such as the Compact Xtra Protection which has a rust resistant paint finish providing extra protection to applications where moisture is ever present. The finish makes these radiators ideal for use in humid or damp air environments – in bathrooms, showers and wet rooms or commercial applications where moisture is ever present in the atmosphere – changing rooms or showering areas, leisure clubs or swimming pool areas. Environments where the additional coating will provide protection and help the radiators to retain their appearance and prevent corrosion, without compromising the heat output.

Do towel radiators heat the bathroom?

Open Close

Most heated towel rails will provide enough heat to warm the bathroom and keep your towels warm.

A towel radiator in a standard bathroom will sufficiently heat the room as well as dry towels. However, it’s worth calculating your heat requirements to make sure. You can install more than one radiator or towel rail depending on the space you have available.

How do bathroom radiators work?

Open Close

Bathroom radiators or towel rails which are plumbed into your central heating system will heat up when the system is switched on by being heated up as hot water is circulated through them, just like a radiator in another room.

Electric towel rails are fitted with an electric element and filled with a water inhibiting fluid. The element inside heats up the fluid and therefore the towel rail gets warm.
