Working Mens Club warms to Stelrad Compact radiators

When Carlton Working Men’s Club just outside Barnsley in South Yorkshire needed to upgrade its heating system it was no great shock when it turned to locally based radiator manufacturer Stelrad – for assistance.

Carlton Working Men’s Club is based in the industrial village of Carlton on the outskirts of Barnsley and has been a focal point for the community for nearly 100 years. Originally built as a social venue for the influx of predominantly Welsh miners that arrived in the village to work at one of the two pit collieries that the mining village grew up around, it is still a valued focal point for the community hosting several community events including children’s Christmas Parties, a huge village bonfire and fireworks display, pool and dominos leagues and a venue for private hire.

With the ever increasing cost of gas and electricity there was an understandable requirement to upgrade the clubs three 20 year old combi boilers and to make the heating and hot water system far more efficient by replacing other components including the equally elderly radiators.

Local installer and member of the club Mark Woodward runs a local firm of heating engineers called Trinity Heating Solutions. Dropping into the club for a pint one evening he found a committee meeting going on discussing how they could find help to rescue the heating system. He offered his help and set about trying to find support from heating industry manufacturers and merchants locally.

Amongst these was Stelrad – based locally in Mexborough and they were approached to see if they would provide any support for the club.  Local Brand Specialist for Stelrad Rebecca Mulholland forwarded a request for support to the powers that be at Stelrad and it was decided because of the importance of the Club in the local community help would be offered in the form of the seven Compact radiators needed to improve the quality of the warmth available in the two bars and the event room.

The radiators were delivered and installed by a group of heating engineers and plumbers from the Club’s membership and the team responsible for the install also managed to get the boilers and the insulation sponsored by other locally based manufacturers and plumbers merchants. The club is now completely re-plumbed and re-installed and ready to take on the worst weather that the winter can throw at it!

“We were really grateful for the offer of the replacement radiators from Stelrad,” says Mark Woodward. “It was a case of we definitely needed to replace the heating system – the main boiler had a burst heat exchanger and the other two boilers were not far behind that one. The radiators had seen better days and had been poorly treated over the decades and the building simply wasn’t properly insulated. The heating bills were astronomical and all the basic things needed to cut the bills were not being done. It was a perfect case study for a total heating and hot water make-over situation. The club simply couldn’t have made it through the coming winter.”

“We were happy to help the Club and come to its rescue after Mark and his team approached us early in 2022,” says Stelrad’s Rebecca Mulholland. “Stelrad has a great track record of helping in particular local charities and organisations that support the local communities of South Yorkshire, so it was good to be able to get the company to extend the hand of friendship to the community that uses the Club as its focal point just a few miles down the road from the main factory here in the UK.”

Stelrad’s best selling Compact radiator series continues to be selected by new home developers and installers replacing heating systems across the country. They are the leading radiators in new build and replacement heating systems in the UK. When sized correctly, they are ideal radiators to work alongside either traditional boiler driven heating systems or the new heat pump driven renewable heating systems that are growing in popularity in the UK.
