Stelrad provides radiators for Ashington Cricket Club

Stelrad continues to build its reputation for offering support to deserving causes and organisations that provide facilities for local people across the country. The donation of a few radiators to projects where new or replacement heating systems are being installed is a small but welcome way it can provide support.

The latest such project is in Ashington in Northumberland – and it’s a town you will probably have heard of because of its association with some well-known north eastern sports people.

The town of Ashington is synonymous with sporting prowess being the birthplace of 1966 World Cup Winners Bobby and Jackie Charlton amongst many other famous sportsmen and women including Newcastle legend Jackie Milburn. Famous for its links to the coal mining industry – the last colliery closed down in 1986.

Something else Ashington takes seriously is its cricket. Ashington Cricket Club was formed in 1892 and has been at its current location since 1920. In 1960, the pavilion/clubhouse was built, which is still in use.

It’s a non-profit making organisation, all money generated over the bar, from player subscriptions and from local sponsors, goes towards maintaining the club and providing facilities and equipment for cricket. The club currently has three adult men’s teams, a Women’s team and a junior section (ages 5 – 15). The men’s first team plays in the NE Premier League, which is the highest league available in the area.

As a small town local club, it is rightly proud to have had four cricketers who started off as juniors and became professional cricketers. The best known of these are Steve Harmison and Mark Wood, hugely successful fast bowlers for England. They are an inspiration for young budding cricketers who come to the club.

The club house at the club has been undergoing improvements recently and this included renovation of its heating system. Whilst cricket is traditionally a game for warm summer evenings, Northumberland is not necessarily the warmest part of the country and the club at Ashington needs to generate income all year round to support its summer exploits. So when it made a plea for help with its new heating system, Stelrad was happy to step up to the plate and offer help with the new radiators.

“It is a tough job in this current economic climate to keep the club financially afloat. If it was not for sponsors and businesses like Stelrad who support us, we would struggle. That is why we really appreciate your support,” says Steve Storey, Club Chairman.

“We were delighted to get involved in the project for the club,” said Lewis Aird, Specification Manager for Stelrad in the North East. “We’ve been able to provide a dozen or so of our best-selling Compact radiators to share the heat around the club house here. Ashington is one of, if not the best-known sporting town in the country with its links to so many sports especially football and cricket and its amazing that so many high class sports people have come from what is a growing but modest town up here near the North Sea coast of Northumberland. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to be able to help them with their renovation project.”
