What Are Convector Radiators?
Convection refers to the circular motion of heat. In this case, the heat is drawn into the convector radiator at the bottom, pushed out at the top, and then circulates through the room back to the bottom again.
A convection radiator has a set of convection fins to help the heat travel more effectively. The convection fins are the metal zig-zag structure you will see bolted inside your radiator. Depending on whether you have a single convector or double convector radiator, you will have one or two rows of convection fins.
As the hot water from your central heating system heats up the convector radiator, it also heats up the fins. This increases the heated surface area available to heat the air. The fins also force the heat to rise upwards rather than just sideways, making the convection process more effective.
Choosing Your Convector Radiator
If you’re wondering what a convector radiator is, it’s a type of radiator that uses the principles of convection to heat a room. Convection is a circular motion of heat, where the warm air rises and cooler air sinks. In the case of a convector radiator, the heat is drawn into the radiator at the bottom, pushed out at the top, and then circulated through the room before returning to the bottom again.
To help make the process of convection more efficient, UK convector radiators come equipped with a set of convection fins. These metal structures are bolted inside the radiator and serve to increase the surface area available to heat the air. Depending on whether you have a single panel convection radiator or a double panel convector radiator, you’ll have one or two rows of convection fins. Radiators with these fins are also called Type 21 or P+, and Type 22 and K2, respectively.
When hot water from your central heating system passes through the convector radiator, it heats up both the radiator and the fins. This increased surface area and heat capacity help to make the convection process more effective, allowing the warm air to rise upwards rather than just sideways.
If you’re looking for an efficient and effective heating solution, then a convection radiator could be a great choice for your home or business. Stelrad offers a wide range of convection radiators in various styles, including single convector radiators and vertical convector radiators, which are designed to fit even the most compact spaces while still providing maximum heating efficiency.
Stelrad Convector Radiators
If you’re in the market for a convection radiator, Stelrad has you covered. Our standard steel radiator range includes single convector radiators that feature a familiar grooved front and a strong steel build for reliable, traditional heating. If you prefer a more streamlined option, we also offer a range with a curved top grille and end sides, available in 16 sizes to ensure you find the best convection radiator for your room.
In response to the growing popularity of vertical radiators, we now offer vertical convector radiator options that provide a contemporary look and efficient heating for any space. Our range includes both single convector vertical radiators and tall double convection radiators, such as the fashionable Vertical Ultra range, which comes in a variety of colours to suit any décor.
To assist you in choosing the perfect convection radiator for your space, we offer two shopping tools. First, our Radiator Size Calculator allows you to enter your wall space dimensions and receive a range of suitable radiator options. However, keep in mind that standard or designer convector radiators of the same size, such as a single convector radiator versus a double convector radiator, can produce different levels of heat. To ensure you select a radiator with optimal heat performance for your room, use our Heat Loss Calculator. This tool takes into account the size of your room, as well as its window space and wall construction, to provide a more accurate recommendation.
