Vertical black radiators for a stylish finish
Black vertical radiators are tall, upright heating panels finished in matte or gloss black, designed to deliver a high heat output from a slim wall footprint. They are typically installed in narrow hallways, behind doors, beside kitchen units and in open-plan living spaces where horizontal wall space is limited. Stelrad’s range of black vertical radiators combines British-engineered steel construction with contemporary styling, giving you a statement heating solution that performs as hard as it looks.
Every model in this collection is manufactured to the same standards that have defined Stelrad since 1936, tested to BS EN 442 and supplied with up to a 15-year warranty as standard. Browse the full range below, or read on to understand how to choose the right tall black radiator for your room.
Why Choose Black Vertical Radiators?
A vertical radiator in black is the most practical answer when you need significant heat output but only have a narrow strip of wall to work with. Standing between 1,600mm and 2,000mm tall, the format frees up floor space, suits modern interiors, and pairs naturally with both pale and dark colour schemes. The black finish hides marks and fingerprints better than white, ages well, and complements industrial, Scandi and contemporary design styles equally.
If you are weighing up format and colour together, our wider guide to vertical radiators covers the technical differences in detail, and our complete black radiators range includes horizontal, column and towel rail options in the same finish.
How to Choose The Right Tall Black Radiator for Your Room?
Choosing the right tall black radiator comes down to three things: heat output, available wall space, and finish. Get those right, and the radiator will both warm the room properly and look the part for the next two decades.
Calculate the heat output your room needs
Heat output is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) or watts. An undersized radiator will struggle to bring the room up to temperature, while an oversized one wastes energy and money. Use our free BTU calculator to get an accurate figure for your room, factoring in dimensions, window glazing, external walls and insulation. As a rough guide, a 4m x 4m living room in a well-insulated home needs around 5,500 BTU.
Measure your available wall space.
Vertical radiators are typically 1,600mm to 2,000mm tall and 300mm to 600mm wide. Measure floor to ceiling, then subtract space for skirting boards and pipework. A 150mm clearance below the radiator and 100mm above will give a clean install. If you are tight on width, double or triple panel models deliver more heat from the same footprint than single panels.
Choose between matte black and gloss black.
Matte black is the more popular choice for kitchens, hallways and contemporary living rooms because it absorbs light and reads as a soft, deep colour against pale walls. Gloss black has more visual punch and works well as a feature against textured wallpapers or panelled walls. Both finishes are oven-baked, scratch-resistant and rated for use across the UK climate.
Pick the right valves and accessories.
Pair your radiator with thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) so you can control the temperature of each room independently. Black or anthracite valves keep the finish consistent. For full control, the Smart TRV connects to a hub and lets you schedule heating zones by zone from your phone.
