Stelrad celebrates National Manufacturing Day 2023

Local firm Stelrad Radiators opened its doors to the whole community as part of Make UK’s National Manufacturing Day celebrations on 28th September 2023.

Stelrad showcased potential careers and jobs on offer and ran scheduled ‘through the keyhole’ tours of its business throughout the day on 28th September, welcoming pupils from two local schools – Ridgewood School and Swinton School – to have a first-hand experience of local manufacturing at the company’s HQ in Mexborough.

British manufacturing companies opened their doors in a UK-wide Open House to give their local communities the chance to see first-hand the potential careers and jobs on offer in the exciting and diverse UK manufacturing sector.  Stelrad was delighted to take part in this event for the second year in a row, organised by manufacturing trade body Make UK. The aim is to help encourage all age groups from school leavers to more experienced workers looking at reskilling to consider the possibilities of a career in manufacturing as well as helping local communities understand more about the businesses on their doorstep.

Stelrad Radiators has been part of the South Yorkshire community, manufacturing radiators for heating systems since 1936. Along with other manufacturers from across the heating sector in the UK and joining companies from aerospace to food and drink, Stelrad hosted a celebration to showcase production operations, how the company works and to put on a series of fun events throughout the day. Visitors were able to talk directly to members of staff about how Stelrad’s operations work and what opportunities there might be available in the business.

Manufacturing covers a wide range of sectors including aerospace, engineering, chemical and pharmaceutical, food and drink, defence, automotive and renewable technologies. Stelrad was keen to demonstrate the value of a manufacturing apprenticeship as an alternative route after school or college as a way to “earn as you learn” – taking a young person all the way to a University Degree for those who want to.

David Taylor Operations Director of Stelrad Radiators said:

“Stelrad was delighted to take part in National Manufacturing Day showcasing our products, processes, tools and people. National Manufacturing Day gives us an opportunity to open our doors to interact with students, teachers and careers advisors to visit our manufacturing facilities, showcasing the exciting opportunities of offer and ‘get behind the scenes of success’.”

Stephen Phipson, CEO of Make UK, the manufacturers organisation said:

“This was a really exciting day where the whole manufacturing sector came together to celebrate the amazing things that Britain designs and makes.

“Our UK manufacturing companies like Stelrad Radiators are at the forefront of global renewable technology development and some of the most innovative engineering developments seen anywhere around the world. This is a sector with amazing opportunities and we hope this second National Manufacturing Day will give people who have never had the chance to see inside their local businesses just what is going on and the opportunities available to them.”
